Awesome Assembly!

Today Room 16 had an awesome assembly, not only did De'Jan recieve a Principals Award but Immanuel and Cici got to read out their writing to the whole Year 3 and 4 syndicate.
De'Jan has been working hard in maths and received her award for "Impressive Progress in Maths".
Fantastic effort De'Jan!

Immanuel read his informative explanation of the four seasons and Cici read her detailed retell of The Seven Stars of Matariki. Both read confidently and clearly and we were very proud of them.

Nice writing Jonathan!

Meet this week's Principal's Award winner, Jonathan. He received his award for trying really hard and making great progress in writing. Jonathan has been using similes and knowledge learnt in Inquiry to create some great writing.

"When the bus driver drove, we were singing "The Wheels on the Bus" and we saw the deep, blue sea next to Mangere Mountain. As soon as we arrived, this lady took us into this room that was as black as night. She explained how the Earth rotates every 24 hours."

Shapes, shapes and more shapes!

This week we are focusing on our Strand Maths topic, Geometry. So far we have been describing and identifying 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional shapes. Today we all made cubes and they had a go at making another 3 D shape.

Our Colourful Cubes.

Cones, cylinders, pyramids, rhombic prisms and triangular prisms.

Jonathan finds a use for his left over paper.

Nice pyramid Caeli!

Shadows.......

Yesterday, we waited for the sun to come out to go outside to do an experiment on our shadows.
First we got paired up and we drew around our shadows, this was at 9.45am. Then we used a scientific skill - measuring and recorded how long our shadow was. At 11.30am we went out again and did the same thing, but the shadow was shorter and it's direction had changed. At 2.00pm we went out and did the same thing again and our shadow went longer again and it's direction had moved again. The shadow was shortest when it was closest to midday - when the sun is at it's highest point in the sky. The change in direction of our shadow shows us the earth is moving.

Trydon drawing carefully around Pranav's shadow.

We found out that our shadow moves in direction throughout the day and it gets shorter closest to midday.

Welcome to Term 2

Welcome back to school for Term 2. We have had an exciting start to the term with a visit to Stardome. Our topic for this term is Exploration. Our trip to Stardome has been a great way for us to begin this topic with the children learning all about what causes day and night and the seasons.
I have been very impressed by the quality of the home learning work completed over the holidays. Doing this work really gives the children an advantage when they come back to school. Two students received Principal's Awards for the high quality of their work.
Congratulations to Immanuel and Alisha!

Our Trip to Stardome - By Cici

On Tuesday 2nd of May, Room 16 went to Stardome.
First we went on a big, long bus to Stardome. It took 20 minutes.
Next, we went inside and waited for a little bit. Then we went into a room with lots of chairs and a lady called Hine met us.
Then we watched a video about how big all the planets and stars were compared to each other. Hine showed us how night and day works. She answered some of our questions.
After that, each group got an i-pad for a quiz. We had to look for a certain display and answer some questions. Anita's mum's group got a head start. ( I was in Anita's mum's group.)
Finally we sat in big comfy chairs to watch a video called "Tilt" on the ceiling. It was about how the tilt of the earth causes seasons. When it was finished we left and went on the bus back to school.
Stardome was very fun.
